Juan Manuel Marquez is reportedly leaning towards facing Mike Alvarado in a non-title showdown on May 17 at The Forum in Inglewood, Calif.

If the proposed Marquez-Alvarado showdown gets finalized, Shann Vilhauer, Alvarado's trainer, feels that his fighter has a good chance of winning against the Mexican boxing icon.

In an interview with BoxingScene, Vilhauer said that they have been targeting a showdown with Marquez over the past three to four years, pointing out that they have a good advantage over the veteran boxer because of Alvarado's size and punching power.

"It is something that Mike has wanted for a long time," Vilhauer said. "Mike has wanted this fight for three to four years now. We always felt that Marquez was tailor made for us. Marquez is a great boxer, obviously one of the best boxers ever. I just think that Mike is the bigger and the stronger guy."

According to reports, the Marquez-Alvarado fight could be arranged at a catchweight of 144 pounds.

Alvarado has been campaigning at 140 points for the past several years, but Vilhauer said that the 144-pound catchweight could work to their advantage.

"That is the best thing that can happen. Mike's perfect fighting weight is 143 points or 144," Vilhauer said. "Those last two, or three, or four pounds are always the hardest to take off. The fat is in the last fight he couldn't get the last three pounds off and it showed at the weigh in."

Vilhauer is also not concerned with Marquez's counter-punching skill that was the key during the 40-year-old Mexican's sixth-round knockout win over Manny Pacquiao in December 2012.

Vilhauer played down Marquez's scintillating win over his Filipino nemesis in their fourth showdown, insisting Marquez caught Pacquiao with a lucky punch and that Marquez would have been knocked out if not for that powerful right hand.

"Everyone said that Marquez timed that right hand and set it up but I don't think so," Vilhauer said. "I think that was a lucky shot and if that hadn't happened he would have got knocked out by Pacquiao in the next round."
