Kanye West appeared in a white button-down shirt with rolled up sleeves and his trusty leather pants to talk fashion and music on "Late Night" with Seth Meyers.
The rapper has been very successful in music, a fact that Meyers was quick to point out, but his transition to fashion has not been an entirely smooth one. Though his collaborations with Nike and French label APC have sold out, he hasn't been able to convince the fashion crowd.
When asked how the creative process in music and fashion differ, West responded with, "Everything in the world is exactly the same."
His biggest problem, he says, is that they want him to be boxed in as an artist, but that goes against the very thing that makes him Kanye.
"For me, I give you paintings, sonic paintings. I have synesthesia, I can see sound in front of me. So when I do fashion, I want to give you sculptures - it's like Michaelangelo, the church wanted him to paint and he wanted to do sculptures," he said.
"The difficult thing for me is that I just want to be able to use marble and make sculptures, but due to the fact that I'm a celebrity and all these different things, they're like, 'No, you can't do this, you have to do this kind of line.' And so it's kind of the first of its kind, so there's been a lot of confusion about why I want to do it and why I'm so frustrated about it."
He explains the problem with his approach to fashion, which is that he goes for the most luxurious but he isn't concerned about the commercial appeal.
It's very fitting that the two talked fashion, as Seth Meyers has become one of Anna Wintour's favorites. He hosted the 2012 CFDA Fashion Awards and wore a see-through dress at Wintour's request. Meyers also works with Bee Shaffer, Wintour's daughter, who serves as a producer on "Late Night."
