Marcos Maidana will have the biggest fight of his boxing career when he collides with Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 3 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Maidana, who was selected by the reigning pound-for-pound king over British boxing icon Amir Khan, earned the right to fight Mayweather after his stunning victory over Adrien Broner in December.
The 30-year-old Argentinian pulled off a huge upset win over the previously unbeaten Broner, knocking down the up-and-coming boxing star en route to a convincing unanimous decision victory in their WBA welterweight title showdown.
Maidana, who is coming off four straight victories, including three knockout wins, knows that Mayweather Jr. is way better than Broner, but he vowed to relish the opportunity, saying that he will hand Mayweather the first loss of his boxing career.
"I am extremely happy to be facing Floyd Mayweather because it will give me the opportunity to show the world that I am the best welterweight in the division," Maidana said in a BoxingScene interview. "I just handed a great defensive fighter his first loss and I plan to do the same to Mayweather. I don't care if he's the best and undefeated."
The Buenos Aires native said that he plans to be as aggressive as he was during the Broner bout, but he also admitted that he needs to prepare harder than ever, saying that Mayweather and Broner are two different types of boxers.
Maidana pointed out that Mayweather is faster than Broner and the undefeated boxing champion runs a lot to get his opponent out of his rhythm, but "El Chino" vowed to cut down Mayweather's speed advantage by outworking the Grand Rapids native every round.
"I have to do a similar job as I did with Broner, but not exactly like that because Floyd is not Broner," Maidana stressed. "The fight [is] different - Broner at times stopped in front of me to fight, he was planted. Mayweather will not do that. He runs. He does not allow you to get close. And he is very fast. I'll have to cut off all that speed."
Maidana is confident that 2012 Trainer of the Year Robert Garcia, who handled the reigning WBA welterweight champion in his last four fights, will have the perfect fight plan in their upcoming showdown with Mayweather.
