On Monday, three Republican senators who voted for Senate Bill 1062, otherwise known as the right-to-refuse service bill, are backtracking on their votes supporting the bill, saying they made a bad decision in a rushed process.

They are now asking Gov. Jan Brewer to veto the bill, according to USA Today.

"We feel it was a solution in search of a problem," Sen. Bob Worsley, R-Mesa, said in a news conference outside the state Senate.

Worsley, along with Sen. Steve Pierce, R-Prescott, and Senate Majority Whip Adam Driggs, R-Phoenix, sent Gov. Brewer a letter Monday morning asking her to veto the bill.

"While our sincere intent in voting for this bill was to create a shield for all citizens' religious liberties, the bill has instead been mischaracterized by its opponents as a sword for religious intolerance," they wrote. "These allegations are causing our state immeasurable harm."

Under the right-to-refuse bill, business owners would be able to deny service to gay and lesbian customers as long as they give a religious reason for doing so.

Brewer has until Saturday to decide whether to veto the bill, which would please business leaders, as the bill's passage could put the state's economy and tourism industry in jeopardy. Or, Brewer could allow it to become a law without her signature.

Worsley and Pierce said the bill moved quickly through the legislature, and they were not given enough time to convince lawmakers to vote against it. Pierce said they also did not want to "tear apart" the GOP caucus, which was divided last year over Brewer's push for an expansion of Medicaid.

Yet, the reaction from the business community and constituents has made them uncomfortable with voting "yes" on the measure, and pushed them to call for a veto.

Worsley said the bill does augment the state's statute protecting religious freedom.

Worsley asked Senate President Andy Biggs, R-Gilbert, over the weekend to allow the Senate to reconsider the vote, but he declined.

If there was another vote, the bill would fail, as the three Republicans would join 13 Democrats in preventing its passage.

Companies such as Apple and American Airlines are also calling on Gov. Brewer to veto the bill, saying the legislation legalizes discrimination against gays.
