Production of the Oculus Rift has ground to a halt due to a lack of available components, despite the fact that the virtual reality headset is not widely available yet. With over 50,000 Oculus Rift VR headsets already sold, it looks as though the company is facing a critical roadblock during this very important time for the company.
Certain key pieces of the Oculus Rift are apparently no longer being available.
"Certain components used in the Oculus Rift developer kit are no longer being manufactured, meaning they are no longer available to us for production," community manager Andres Hernandez revealed in the Oculus sub-reddit. "As a result, we don't have the necessary materials to produce additional kits. We still have some stock available, but we're quickly running out. We are looking into alternate sources for the needed components, and we don't yet have a timeline for when additional units will be available. We'll be sure to keep everyone posted."
Hernandez also revealed that, due to the quickly dwindling supply of the Oculus Rift, sales will be limited to certain select regions until either production begins again or the current supply is completely sold out. It is unclear how many units of the VR headset are still left, or what components of the periphery are now no longer available to the manufacturer.
This news could not come at a worse time for Oculus Rift backers. The company recently announced "Riftcon," a convention aimed at virtual reality technology and how it can be used for educational or cultural exhibits. Without the ability to create more Oculus Rift headsets, then this new Riftcon could be put in jeopardy.
Meanwhile, rumors have begun to surface about a possible competing product for the Oculus Rift. Sony is rumored to be creating its own virtual reality headset for the PlayStation 4, with the Game Developers Conference in March being cited as a possible time for the project's big reveal. If the company does announce its own VR headset, Sony could demo games using the tech as soon as E3 2014 in June. If the Oculus Rift is down for a sizeable amount of time then this new virtual reality headset might steal the spotlight.
