Sony is set to announce a virtual reality headset for the PlayStation 4 at the Game Developer's Conference in March, according to an anonymous source.
Sony has been rumored for sometime to be developing its own virtual reality technology, but this is the first time there's been any sort of indication when Sony would actually announce plans to make a VR headset. The new headset is still in the development stages according to the unidentified source, but if the tipster is to be believed, it sound slike it will be worth the wait. "Sony has deliberately taken its time to tweak and polish the headset before revealing it," the source said, TechRadar reported.
"The quality and resolution are really, really good...People will definitely be impressed with what Sony's built."
Rumors have also circulated that Sony was possibly showing off some virtual reality games at the 2014 edition of E3, so if Sony was planning to announce its VR headset before then, the Game Developers Conference is an ideal launch pad.
With Sony possibly planning to release a VR headset for the PlayStation 4, the Oculus Rift may have some competition when the device is eventually released to the public. The Oculus Rift is a virtual reality headset that was originally funded by a Kickstarter campaign and has since blossomed into one of the most intriguing devices in recent memory. The developers behind the VR headset have consistently revealed new and improved models of the technology, but Oculus Rift has yet to discuss a release date or what platforms will be compatible with the device.
Virtual Reality appears to be the next big thing in gaming, and while there has yet to be an VR headset available to gamers, the unnamed Sony VR headset and the Oculus Rift prove that there is a demand for the technology. What remains to be seen is if other console makers decide to make their own VR headsets or if the technology is affordable and appealing enough to gamers to warrant the huge investment companies are putting into VR research. With the variety of different videos of people playing modified versions of games on the Oculus Rift available online, VR headsets could soon become the preferred method for playing games in the future.
