After almost two weeks of intense Biathlon competition, the most physically grueling event in the Winter Olympics will finally come to an end on Friday in the finals of the women's 4X6 kilometer relay in Sochi, Russia.

Hot favorites Darya Domracheva of Belarus and Olga Zaitseva of Russia will try to add another golden performance to their current medal haul, as they look to outrace some of the world's best biathlon athletes in Friday's finale.

Domracheva has already netted three gold medals in this year's Olympics, and is gunning to tie the record set by OIe Einar with four gold medals in the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. However, Domracheva is facing a tougher task this time around, as Belarus takes on super powers Norway, Ukraine and host nation Russia for the top spot on the podium.

The Belarusian have long prepared for the final biathlon event, as she even skipped the mixed relay event (where Belarus had zero chance to medal) to save energy for Friday's event.

"Domracheva skipped the first Olympic mixed relay Wednesday because she couldn't see the Belarusian team having a shot at the medals. She proved right as Belarus finished 11th. Domracheva managed to save energy for the women's relay. It would take a major upset for Belarus to win though," Charlotte Observer reporter Eric Willemsen stated.

On the other hand, Zaitseva will attempt to sustain her winning ways after helping the Russian team win the gold in the 4x6 kilometers relay in the 2006 Turin Olympics and 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

"With its highest-ranked competitor, Irina Starykh, missing from the Olympics because of a failed doping test, Russia hasn't been able to give its home crowd much to cheer about. Olga Vilukhina's silver from the 7.5K sprint is the only medal for the Russian women so far, leaving all hopes on the final event. Led by Zaitseva and Vilukhina, Russia is seeking its third Olympic relay gold in succession and fourth overall, more than any other nation," the writer stated.

However, current world champions Norway and runner-up Germany are expected to give it their best shot and crush the dreams of these two outstanding biathletes.
