A Wisconsin court recently released 27,000 pages of emails from a former aide to Gov. Scott Walker, who was convicted last year of using her government job to do illegal campaign work.
Kelly Rindfleisch emails were made public as part of the "John Doe investigations" into Walker's staff. She pleaded guilty in 2012 to felony charges for doing campaign work while at her government job. She was then sentenced to six months in jail plus three years of probation, reports MSN.
At the time, the Republican governor was the Milwaukee County executive and the emails were sent while Rindfleisch was working as his deputy chief of staff in 2010, reports NPR.
Walker, who is a rising star in the GOP party and up for re-election this year, was not charged with any wrongdoing in the investigation. He also claims that he was unaware of the illegal activity happening under his watch.
Just before the documents were released, he announced Wednesday morning that he was confident that they did not contain incriminating content that could be used against him.
"Most of those would be four or more years old and they've gone through a legal process ... a multi-year extensive legal process by which each and every one of those communications was reviewed by authorities," Walker said. "I'm confident that they reviewed them and they chose to act on the ones they've already made public."
Rindfleisch, who is appealing her conviction, was one of six people convicted following a secret investigation into former Walker aides and associates.
According to Walker, that was an example of cynicism in politics.
"These people are naysayers who want things bad to happen in Wisconsin so they are going to be circling again today," Walker said. "It's exactly what's wrong with the political process that they're hoping for something bad to happen in Wisconsin. It's not. They're going to do what they've done in the past which is over-hype things. And politically they're going to be disappointed."
