The 2014 Sochi Olympics women's curling competition will reach its penultimate stage as Great Britain and Switzerland collide for the bronze, while Canada and Sweden battle for Olympic supremacy on Thursday.
Canada advanced to the women's curling finals after escaping with a 6-4 victory over Great Britain in a thrilling semi-final showdown on Wednesday at the Ice Cube Curling Center in Sochi.
Canada's Jennifer Jones started out strong, taking a 3-0 lead after the first two ends. Jones looked poised to run away with a comfortable win, but Great Britain put a lot of pressure on the Canadians in the next several ends.
Britain's Eve Muirhead pulled within a point, 5-4, heading into the final end, but Canada held on to the win as Jones went perfect in her final stone to end their British counterparts' comeback bid and gold medal hopes.
"I'm so proud of us. I thought we came out and played lights out today," Jones told The Globe and Mail. "It's crazy to think that we're going to be on that podium, I'm not going to lie."
The Canadians, who are still undefeated in the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, will go up against Sweden in the gold medal match scheduled on Thursday, 8:30 a.m. EST.
Sweden earned a finals spot with a 7-5 win against Switzerland in the semifinals.
Switzerland's Mirhjam Ott had a chance to win it for her squad, but she was heavy with a draw in her final rock, allowing Sweden's Margaretha Sigfridsson and her team to escape with the win.
Canada will head into Thursday's match as the heavy favorite over Sweden after scoring a lopsided 9-3 win during their showdown in the round robin stage of the tournament.
"We've played them lots before. They're a great team," Jones said of their upcoming showdown with Sweden. "They're pretty aggressive so I expect there to be lots of rocks in play. Similar to today, I think it's going to come down to last rock and we just really hope we have it."
The losing semifinalists Great Britain and Switzerland will battle at 3:30 a.m. EST for a place at the podium in the bronze medal match.
