Rust has been a huge hit on Steam Early Access despite being in an early alpha build, with more than 1 million users buying the game. The survival game charges users to build a base of operations and either team up with other users or survive as a loner. Building up a strong base that can withstand attacks from a variety of sources is key. To help out new users, here's a guide to building a strong base in Rust.

Before even starting to build a fort, users must decide what sort of structure they want. There are a variety of different terrains in Rust, and each offers its own unique set of pros and cons. If a user decides to build a base next to a cliff or rock wall, they will only have to build a limited number of walls because the rock will cover them. However, this could leave players vulnerable; if their fort gets breached they will not be able to retreat from the attacks. Building on a field or on a hill will give players a 360 degree view of their surroundings, but these forts will cost additional resources to build.

Once users have picked out the right location, they should consider if they want their fort to be taller or wider. Eventually players will be able to choose if they want both dimensions, but at the beginning users should consider expanding their fort one way or the other. Users can build a tall structure so they have a better view of their surroundings, or they can build a wider structure that covers more ground.

Gathering enough resources to make the proper fort is key. Metal is the best material for making a fort, but creating enough of it to cover a fort can be time consuming. The best route for creating a fort is to make a basic wooden fort and wall near stone deposits and quickly find blueprints for crafting stronger parts for the fort.

Once the fort is reasonably constructed, extras such as spike walls can further add to defenses. Players should also consider a simple escape route to ensure they can flee from their fort without injury or death. Building a tower with an extension that can only be accessd one way that allows a player to jump over their outer walls is a solid way to make sure players can leave without difficulty.
