Costa Rica and Honduras will contest a semifinals berth on Sunday when the two clubs meet in the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2013 quarterfinals.
Both clubs enter with identical records after three matches.
Costa Rica won its opener against Cuba by a confident 3-0 marker before struggling to score against a stubborn Belize side in a 1-0 win. The team then took on the United States in the deciding group match and conceded an 82nd minute in a 1-0 loss.
Honduras suffered a similar fate through its group round qualifications. The team was outmatched by Haiti in its opener but managed a 2-0 victory. In the second game against El Salvador, the struggles continued despite a 1-0 win; that goal came in the second minute of second half stoppage. In the final group game, Honduras was effectively dominated by a desperate Trinidad and Tobago side.
These teams have met 55 times in their history with Costa Rica earning 22 victories and 15 draws dating back to 1930; Costa Rica won the first six contests between these two sides. The last 10 meetings since 2007 have favored Costa Rica as well. The Costa Ricans have taken five of those and lost three; the other two games have ended in draws. In that span, the most lopsided victory was a 4-0 win for Honduras in a World Cup qualifier in August 2009.
Prediction: Costa Rica has to be the favorite here after a more solid display in the tournament overall. Look for them to pull off a 1-0 win.
