Bethesda has announced the release date for Wolfenstein: The New Order and revealed that the game will come with beta access for the upcoming Doom 4.
The game's release date was revealed at the end of the newest Wolfenstein trailer (see below). Wolfenstein: The New Order will hit Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC in North America on May 20. In addition, those who pre-order the game will receive access to the long-awaited Doom 4, which has been shortened to just "Doom" by Bethesda.
This is huge news on many different fronts. For one thing, Wolfenstein appears to be the game that many fans have been waiting years for after several mediocre 3-D titles in the series routinely failed to live up to the standard that the old-school first-person shooter series had in the past. Secondly, this confirms that Doom is alive and well and could be arriving sooner than many people may have anticipated.
As for the actual trailer for Wolfenstein, it shows off the series trademark Nazi enemies in brand new ways and gives the protagonist for the game, B.J Blazkowicz, some much needed personality. The bloody trailer is engrossing from the opening scene of the Nazis destroying Mount Rushmore and continues to impress in scenes of the character blasting his way through enemies big and small. Bethesda seems to have struck the right balance between old-school Wolfenstein aesthetics and next-gen shine to make it stand out among the variety of first-person shooters that have flooded the market.
While fans of the Doom series will be able to get access to the beta for the next-gen entry to the series by pre-ordering Wolfenstein: The New Order, not much is known about the game currently. Doom was originally supposed to appear on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but plans may have changed now that the game has taken so long to create. The game may appear on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One due to this delay, and it is also widely expected that Doom will be available on the PC like the early installments of the franchise.
