Forza Motorsport 5 has sold over 1 million copies, meaning around one-third of Xbox One owners have bought the game since both the game and console were launched Nov. 22.
With the latest sales figures, Forza Motorsport 5 is now the "best-selling racing game" in relation to the amount of consoles it is available on, developer Turn 10 said in a press release, IGN reported. The Xbox One has sold 3 million units according to the latest numbers released by Microsoft, and 1 million of those users now have the game.
This is undoubtedly good news for fans of the series, as the game has a healthy community to draw from for the multiplayer-focused racing game. It is unclear what sort of saturation other Xbox One games have in proportion to the amount of total consoles sold, but it is hard to see many other franchises being able to claim one-third of the Xbox One's current user base.
Turn 10 is not resting on its laurels despite the company's immense success on the Xbox One. The Smoking Tires DLC for the game recently added 10 new vehicles to the game, and there's even more DLC on the way for fans of the series and those who have bought the season pass for DLC on Forza Motorsport 5. Turn 10 may also be working on a new Forza Horizon game according to a leak that allegedly pegged the unannounced game for a fall 2014 release date. However, Microsoft and Turn 10 have remained silent about the possibility of a new Forza game appearing around a year after Forza Motorsport 5 was released.
This announcement may be good for the Forza series, but it may indicate that sales of the Xbox One have slowed or become stagnant. The 3 million Xbox One sales were originally reported in a year-end report for 2013, and since then Microsoft has not updated the sales numbers for the machine. Meanwhile, Sony recently revealed that the PlayStation 4 has sold 5.3 million units and some reports indicate that the PlayStation 4 outsold the Xbox One 2-1 in January. These figures could indicate the real reason Forza Motorsport 5 appears on a higher number of consoles—weak sales, not popularity.
