The Houston Rockets are reportedly shopping Omer Asik again, despite an earlier announcement from the team that the disgruntled center will likely stay in Houston for the remainder of his contract.
CBS Sports reported on Tuesday that the Rockets have renewed their interest in moving Asik before Thursday's trade deadline, with sources saying that the Philadelphia 76ers are the most likely landing spot of the 27-year-old center.
Sources indicated that the Rockets and the 76ers are currently engaged in initial discussions about a potential deal involving Asik, who has only played in 20 games this season, averaging 3.9 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.
The 76ers are considered the most likely landing spot since they can absorb Asik's contract without giving up any players in the deal because they are currently $11 million under the salary cap.
It is almost certain that the 76ers will make a trade before the deadline because they are currently $5.1 million under the league's $52.8 million minimum payroll.
However, it is still unknown if the 76ers are willing to give up a high draft pick in a potential deal for Asik. Talks between the two teams in December reportedly fell apart due to Rockets' demand for draft picks. The Rockets are reportedly interested in Spencer Hawes, but the 76ers are allegedly shopping the veteran for a first-round pick.
"The Rockets want a first-round pick for Asik, sources say. The Sixers have New Orleans' 2014 pick (1-5 protected), but are looking to use their cap space to acquire first-round picks -- not divest them. Philadelphia's floor-spacing Spencer Hawes interests the Rockets, but the Sixers have been asking teams for a first-round pick in return," CBS Sports noted.
The Toronto Raptors and the Brooklyn Nets were also previously linked to Asik, but both teams are not willing to give in to the Rockets' demands. The Atlanta Hawks are highly interested in Asik, but the team also believes that the Rockets are asking for too much in exchange for the Turkish center.
"The Raptors and Nets have no interest in acquiring Asik, sources say. The Hawks like him, but not at the Rockets' current asking price. The problem in assembling a deal with the Sixers is the same problem the teams experienced in December," CBS Sports added.
