When "Glee" returns from its hiatus, there will be a time jump that explains the exclusive shift to the New York City storyline.
When the series resumes, the show will leap ahead several months between the graduation of Sam (Chord Overstreet), Blaine (Darren Criss) and Artie (Kevin McHale) and their move to NYC.
Also, two characters who have had no romantic history will share a kiss, causing everyone else to have feelings of revulsion.
While it has also been reported that Amber Riley will be back for the series' 100th episode, TVLine reports that Mercedes will be sticking around for a little while.
"You're going to see where Mercedes' life is going in a couple of episodes," Riley teased. "You may even see her in a new city."
In the next episode, "Frenemies," Santana (Naya Rivera) will participate in Rachel's (Lea Michele) "Funny Girl" photo shoot-- complete in her Barbra Streisand alter-ego--which leads her to become Rachel's understudy in the musical. The casting decision will incite tension between the two friends.
New photos show the audition for Rachel's understudy, as well as Artie and Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) battling it out for valedictorian honors. You can check out the photos here.
The synopsis for the upcoming episode reads: "Rachel will face off with Santana. Kurt is going head-to-head with Elliott. And Tina will be feuding with her ex-boyfriend, Artie."
TVLine also confirms that rumors about season five having only 19 episodes are false; the current season will have 22 episodes.
Fox chief Kevin Reilly told reporters at the Television Critics Association winter press tour last month that not all of the McKinley students will move to NYC.
"Creatively, it would ridiculous if everybody moves to New York," said Reilly. "This season, there's going to be a graduation [from Lima's William McKinley High]. Several of the cast members will move on, and a few others will go to New York."
While some McKinley High students will fade into the background, Sue Sylvester will move to NYC along with her former students.
"As long as there's a show, there's Jane," Reilly said.
He said the characters who do not move to New York "will arc back in when we do special episodes. They'll always be a part of it. The way it's going to dovetail next season, we're going to see some familiar faces coming around in some capacity."
"We do have [the show] through next season and that will be the final season," Reilly continued. "[Ryan's] got some fantastic ideas on what we're going to next year for the final year."
TVLine confirmed that Dianna Agron, a.k.a Quinn Fabray, will be returning for the 100th episode in addition to Riley, as well as Heather Morris, Mark Salling and Harry Shum.
"Glee" will return for episode nine of its fifth season on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 8 p.m. EST on Fox.
