The director of Final Fantasy 7 would like to make a HD remake of the game at some point, but several different factors prevent him from pursuing this goal.

Yoshinori Kitase was interviewed concerning his role as producer for the latest Final Fantasy game, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13. However, conversation shifted to the possibility of Final Fantasy 7 and while Kitase would like to see the remake happen, it is doubtful it will happen anytime soon.

"I can honestly tell you I would love to do that," Kitase told Eurogamer. "If you simply ask me if I personally would like to do that, yes I would. Definitely. There's no lie about it. But you must believe me when I say it would take a lot to happen."

When asked specifically what is preventing him or others at Square Enix from creating the HD Remake of the beloved game, the producer cited "staff availability and budget" as reasons the project would not be approved. This makes sense given that Square Enix is currently working on a PlayStation 4 version of Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn, an HD Remake of Final Fantasy 10 and 10-2, Final Fantasy 15, and Kingdom Hearts 3. With all these projects in various stages of development it would be a lot to ask of Square Enix employees to add a Final Fantasy 7 HD Remake to the roster. Kitase also revealed that he believes it would take nearly three or four times longer to develop than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game to ensure the remake has the same quality of Final Fantasy 13.

The producer/ director also cited personal motivation to create the game as an obstacle that may prevent the game from being created.

"Even if I casually say I would like to do that, because it would be a huge project I would have to motivate myself to the level that I really am prepared to take on this huge responsibility," Kitase said. "...But should I ever take it on, it would have to be the biggest project I've done. My life work. So I would have to be as highly motivated as that to end up with something I'm very happy with. It's a huge thing for me."

In any case, it looks as though fans will have to enjoy the new batch of Final Fantasy projects rather than hope to replay one of the all time classics in the series.
