Little Mac, the protagonist of the Punch-Out series, has been confirmed as the newest character for Super Smash Bros. 4.
The character was confirmed during the latest Nintendo Direct held by the company. In a special trailer (similar to the one that announced Rosalina and Luma would be joining the series) Little Mac was shown mixing it up with several members of the game's roster.
In the trailer announcing Little Mac, we first see his character in shadow, with "Rocky"-like music playing in the background. Eventually we see the character and his familiar coach in a gym training. Instead of the usual artwork and graphics found in Super Smash Bros. 4, this trailer has a more stylized, hand-drawn aesthetic that makes it look unique compared to all the other previews Nintendo has put out for the game. Little Mac is seen jumping rope, doing sit ups, and other activities to prepare himself to take on foes such as Mario, Donkey Kong and Link.
When we finally see Little Mac in some gameplay action, he appears on a stage with Samus, who points out how she towers over him. Little Mac answers the taunt with a quick punch that rockets Samus out of the stage. Perhaps unsurprisingly, much of Little Mac's offense consists of various types of punches, as he seems to rely on different combos to keep foes rocking before delivering a KO punch to opponents. The character looks to have a unique power meter than can build up in a match and lead to stronger attacks as time goes on. Finally, a preview of Little Mac's final smash is shown, and the former pint-sized pugilist grows into a monstrous form that towers over other characters.
Little Mac was previously featured in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as a nonplayable character. With his inclusion in the newest game there are now 23 characters confirmed for Super Smash Bros. 4. However, the game does not have a release date set yet, so it may be some time before fans get to play as the new character. The Wii U and 3DS game is expected sometime in 2014.
