Mayor Julian Castro of San Antonio is a rising political star in the Democratic Party, not only in Texas but nationwide. By the end of the week, that nation will see a new look out of one of its favorite Hispanic role models ... a very blonde look.

"A couple of months ago I was at Lanier and a student stood up and asked if I would dye my hair blonde if the basketball team went to the playoffs," Castro told Fox News. "They're in the playoffs so I'm going to blonde. I'm going to make good on my word."

"Hopefully the students will learn two things. First of all, that when you give your word you keep it. And secondly, that we care so much about them out in the community and want for them to succeed. And we're going to be there cheering their success on the basketball court and in the classroom."

Asked if there is a timeline for the transformation, a chuckling Castro said "probably at the end of the week."

The Lanier Voks are carrying a 25-7 overall record (10-4 in district play) into the Texas UIL playoffs coming off a 62-29 win over Burbank on Monday night. They are entering the playoffs as the third place representative from District 10-4A. Their first opponent has not yet been determined as of press time.

Castro did not disclose how long he planned to maintain his new blonde look. He is scheduled to be the featured speaker at the United State of the City Address on Feb. 25 in San Antonio, where he will give an overview of the past successes of the City of San Antonio and outline goals for the future.

The event will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio.
