A new Angry Birds spinoff game has been announced featuring female characters.

The new title, Angry Birds Stella, stars "a group of feisty characters with a shared love for fun, adventure and creativity," developer Rovio said in a press release, according to IGN.

It is unclear just what we can expect from Angry Birds Stella at this point. Details are few and far between, especially concerning actual gameplay. Rovio launched a Tumblr, but the sole image found on the page only shows off the new characters and a mysterious figure looming over them.

Rovio appears to reaching for a more story-focused game with Angry Birds Stella, and the press release claims that the game will take "fans to parts of the Angry Birds world we've never seen before. Angry Birds Stella is all about inspiration, empowerment and other real issues, without forgetting entertainment and quirky fun."

These words were echoed by Rovio's CEO Mikael Hed, who is confident that this new batch of characters will be able to both bring new elements to the franchise while retaining the fun and excitement that the series is known for.

"Angry Birds Stella is breaking the mold by introducing strong, passionate characters who really stand for something, while adding plenty of action and reality into the mix. The Angry Birds Stella story will live and evolve across physical and digital, bridging them in fun and innovative ways. Stella and her friends are here to stay, with plenty of adventures ahead of them," said Hed. 

Angry Birds is not just a video game phenomenon, the franchise has swelled into a department store's worth of merchandise. And Angry Birds Stella is no exception. Rovio is preparing toys, books, and new animations to expand the new series beyond the video game landscape once again. 

What remains to be determined is if Angry Birds Stella will be a mobile game like many of the Angry Birds series or if Rovio the title as a console game. After all, if the developer is serious about focusing more on character development and storylines, Rovio may have a console game planned to better fit the scope of the game.
