Brandon "Bam Bam" Rios believes that his stable mate Marcos Maidana is a more deserving opponent for Floyd Mayweather Jr. than Amir Khan, who is considered the favorite to land a fight with the undefeated boxing champion.
Rios, who trains with Maidana at the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy, told BoxingScene on Tuesday that Maidana is the more ideal choice for Mayweather, saying that the Argentinian fighter can put Floyd Jr. in trouble with his aggressiveness and all-out approach.
"I think Maidana is more interesting than Amir Khan because of the fact that Maidana comes to fight and he's going to be on Floyd, breathing down his chest," Rios said.
Khan was an overwhelming favorite to land a date with the reigning pound-for-pound king until Maidana's stock went up to an all-time high after scoring an upset win over Adrien Broner.
Maidana stunned the then-undefeated Broner, dropping him twice to the canvass, leading to a convincing unanimous decision victory during their WBA welterweight title showdown in December last year.
"Like he did to Broner, and everybody thought Broner was the next Floyd and Maidana shut that out of the water. I think it will be a great fight; him and Maidana," Rios added.
Previous reports indicated that Khan's speed could pose problems to Mayweather Jr. if ever the Briton lands a fight with the reigning pound-for-pound king on May 3 in Las Vegas.
Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach and former champion Ricky Hatton both said that Khan's style and speed is perfect to negate the defensive prowess of the 36-year-old Mayweather, but Rios thinks otherwise.
Rios insisted that Khan might be faster than Mayweather's previous opponents, but he reiterated that Mayweather will eventually catch the Briton once Floyd Jr. figures him out after the first few rounds.
"Sometimes Amir Khan, he steps on his own toes sometimes. He comes in too quick. He's too quick, too aggressive, and sometimes he leaves himself open when he throws a lot of punches," Rios said. "He's very fast, yes, I give Amir Khan that, but sometimes he'll jump in and Mayweather's one of the best counter punchers. One of the best boxers out there and I think he'll catch him with something."
Mayweather, the reigning WBC and WBA light middleweight champion, is expected to announce his next opponent in the coming weeks.
