A California meat packing company that recently recalled a sizable amount of beef products is believed to have sold most of the inventory to Hispanic meat markets.
On Feb. 8 the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the recall of nearly nine million pounds of meat.
"Rancho Feeding Corporation, a Petaluma, Calif. establishment, is recalling approximately 8,742,700 pounds, because it processed diseased and unsound animals and carried out these activities without the benefit or full benefit of federal inspection," the USDA said in a statement. "Thus, the products are adulterated, because they are unsound, unwholesome or otherwise are unfit for human food and must be removed from commerce, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today."
The recall comes only a month after another recall was issued to the same company for approximately 42,000 pounds of meat.
The types of products listed by the agency as subject to recall include many items that are standard fare in Latino cuisine, including tripe, sweet breads, ox tails and cattle heads. While the company is still compiling a full list of all the retailers that they sold meats to, most of the initial list of recipients were Hispanic markets.
While the USDA notes that there have been no reported illnesses associated with the inventory in question, the new release does list the Health Risk status as "High" on this situation.
According to the Press Demcrat, the USDA announced on Tuesday that it was expanding the investigation into the operations of the Rancho Feeding Corporation.
"USDA's Office of the Inspector General is conducting an ongoing investigation into Rancho Feeding Corporation," the USDA stated, adding that the probe will include "an immediate and thorough examination of the firm's practices, procedures and management."
