As "How I Met Your Mother" wraps up its ninth and final season on CBS, it was recently announced that Greta Gerwig has landed the leading role on the series' spin-off "How I Met Your Dad."

According to Entertainment Weekly, the 30-year-old indie film star will play Sally Gerwig, "a female Peter Pan who has never grown up and has no idea of where she's going in life. She has just figured out that she has nothing in common with her husband of less than a year. A break-up is inevitable, but Sally will find a solid circle of support in her friends and family, who are often too willing to give 'good' advice that can backfire badly. Meanwhile, Sally must filter out the input and decide what's best for her."

However, along with starring in the new series this fall, Gerwig is also expected to help produce and possibly write for the comedy, alongside "How I Met Your Mother" creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas and "Up All Night" creator Emily Spivey.

Like the original sitcom, "How I Met Your Dad" will be told via flashbacks and, if picked up, will follow Sally as she navigates dating and life, leading up to the man she will eventually marry, reports CBS News.

Earlier this year, Gerwig was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance in the comedy "Frances Ha," which she also co-wrote. She also held supporting roles in mainstream comedies, such as "No Strings Attached" and "Arthur," and stars in the upcoming film "The Humbling" with Al Pacino.

"How I Met Your Dad" is slated to shoot its pilot in Los Angeles, but will move to New York if it is picked up to series, notes TV Guide.
