Video game players in the United States spent more than $15 billion on games and other similar content in 2013, according to a new report from the NPD Group.
The NPD Group found that Americans spent $15.39 billion in 2013 on physical and digital games, hardware, DLC, subscriptions for games, and mobile games, Gamespot reported.
Overall, digital content accounted for the biggest slice of the video game pie. Between the sales of digital games and their extras, gamers in the United States spent $7.22 billion. This includes full versions of console games, games found on Steam and other similar digital stores, mobile and social media games, DLC, and subscriptions to online games or Xbox Live/ PlayStation Plus. NPD Group noted that a spike in sales during 2013 helped offset the decreasing sales of physical game media.
Gamers may be going digital, but users still spent $6.34 billion on new physical games for consoles and the PC in 2013, a decline of 11 percent compared to 2012. Video game fans also bought $1.83 billion in used games.
Hardware sales rose in 2013, in part due to the launch of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One late in the year. Compared to 2012, hardware sales were up 5 percent in 2013. This rise managed to overcome the slow sales for consoles in the early parts of the year that were caused by the impending launches of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, as well as the Wii U's inability to sell. All in all, total consumer spending for the video game industry rose 2 percent overall in comparison to 2012.
"The bottom line is that the overall games market is growing," said Liam Callahan, an analyst for the NPD Group. "NPD reported declines in content and hardware spending in both 2011 and 2012, so the growth in 2013 is a positive indicator for future market growth as we enter the first full year with all three new consoles on the market."
With the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One causing a new wave of interest in console gaming and the general rise of mobile games raking in huge amounts of money for developers, the video game industry is poised to surpass the growth reported in 2013 and make 2014 a very successful year for the industry.
