The Golden State Warriors are showing a lot of promise this season, but NBA analysts believe that the Warriors still need to make moves before the deadline if they want to go deep in the playoffs this season.
But in order to acquire an impact player before the deadline, the Warriors should be willing to trade away key assets as well, as Grantland noted.
The Warriors already traded away their picks earlier in the season during the deal that sent Jordan Crawford and MarShon Brooks to Golden State, which means that they could be forced to part ways with either Harrison Barnes or Klay Thompson in a trade for a game changing player.
"If they really want to add an impact piece this season, they'll either have to orchestrate another three-team trade or part with one of the Harrison Barnes-Klay Thompson duo," Grantland reported.
Between the two young prospects, Thompson is expected to attract stronger interest from several teams. The third-year shooting guard is having another great season, averaging 18.3 points and 3.0 rebounds per game this season.
Barnes, on the other hand, is averaging 10.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per game, but has been inconsistent all season long.
Previous reports indicated that the Warriors were losing their patience with the second-year forward, but it appears that Golden State is not yet ready to part ways with the former North Carolina standout.
Sources said that the Warriors will try to acquire a key player without giving up Barnes and Thompson. Instead, the Warriors will look to make a deal using their sizeable trade exceptions and $2.5 million cap space to acquire an impact player.
"Though Barnes especially has struggled, sources around the league say Golden State doesn't appear ready quite yet to go this route. The Dubs also have two sizable trade exceptions they could use to take on another player, but they've got about only $2.5 million in wiggle room below the tax," Grantland reported.
The Warriors have been shopping for a point guard all season long with previous rumors suggesting that they were very interested in acquiring Chicago Bulls point guard Kirk Hinrich or Toronto Raptors playmaker Kyle Lowry.
Among their two targets, a trade for Hinrich looks more feasible at this point since the Bulls are planning to become sellers before the deadline.
Lowry is a better option, but the Raptors are now reportedly leaning towards keeping the 27-year-old point guard, who is averaging 16.7 points to go along with 7.5 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game this season.
