A storage bug issue has been discovered within Windows Phone devices.

An owner of a Windows Phone, Kevin Gosse, figured something was wrong while using the Imageboard Browser app.

According to WPCentral, the app has caused problems in the past, as apparently hundreds of megabytes of data would be used, therefore taking up needed space. In Gosse's case, however, he tracked the issue to the methods "MediaLibrary.SavePicture" and "MediaLibrary.SavePictureToCameraRoll," both applied to save images to Windows Phone's pictures hub. It was then found that a copy of any image could also be saved in a different storage location.

Gosse made the effort to write an app to prove the storage issue. The testing effort worked as when an image is downloaded and saved (as normal), a copy was found in another storage site.

According to the report, Goose's conclusion saw that the issue was not valid for Windows Phone 7 devices but Windows Phone 8 smartphones with update 8.0.10211.204 installed. Although it is unsure if it affects all Windows Phone 8 smartphones, Gosse did test the Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 822. The storage problems only occurs when saving JPG images, not PNG pictures.

"If I anticipate and create beforehand a file on the isolated storage with the same name, it will be overwritten," wrote Gosse. "If I lock it by keeping the stream open, the MediaLibrary.SavePicture method throws an exception."

"In a nutshell, if you're saving pictures to the picture hub, make sure you're deleting the temporary files in the isolated storage afterwards. I hope Microsoft will be able to provide a fix quickly, as it can quickly become an issue on devices with low storage," added Gosse."
