Super Smash Bros. 4 will feature Mother Brain from the Metroid series along with the legendary Pokémon Palkia in the game, according to Nintendo.
In the latest update on its official website, Nintendo confirmed Metroid and Palkia will be part of the game, but not as playable characters. Palkia was confirmed as a summonable Pokémon that players will be able to use by capturing and throwing Poke balls that appear during a match. Mother Brain, one of the primary antagonists from the Metroid series, was confirmed as an assist trophy with a similar function to Palkia, only as an assist trophy rather than a summonable Pokémon.
Palkia previously appeared in a limited role in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as a stage hazard in the Spear Pillar stage. In the previous entry to the series Palkia would randomly attack players, but now players will have some measure of control over the massive Pokémon. The screenshot shows the character performing the signature Spacial Rend attack, something opponents should wach out for when they see the towering Pokémon appear on the battlefield.
In a similar role to Palkia, Mother Brain appears when users grab an assist trophy, and proceeds to attack foes. The screenshot that accompanied the announcement of Mother Brain shows the character attacking Samus. Mother Brain has not appeared in any other Super Smash Bros. games.
These two new characters will certainly liven up Super Smash Bros. 4, and fans should be excited that Nintendo has begun revealing more information about nonplayable characters that will appear in the game. While Nintendo has revealed 22 playable characters for the game, including the latest addition Lucario, the developer has remained silent for the most part about Poke ball and assist trophy characters for the game. The confirmed assist trophy characters are Ashley, Skull Kid, Nintendogs, Phantom Knight, Starfy, and now Mother Brain. The two confirmed Poke ball characters are Palkia and Xerneas.
Super Smash Bros. 4 does not currently have a set release date, but Nintendo has indicated that the game is targeted for a 2014 launch. The game will be coming to the Wii U and 3DS, making the game the first entry into the series that will be available on a handheld system.
