Women's Slopstyle Snowboarding will reach its boiling point on Sunday as finals qualifiers who stood out from the two-round preliminaries compete for the gold medal in the inaugural event at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.

For the first time in the history of the Winter Olympics, a pair of gold medals will be contested in the Slopestyle Snowboarding discipline. On Friday, the United States bagged its first gold medal in the Winter Games following a sensational performance from Sage Kotsenburg.

The race for the gold medal suddenly opened up following the withdrawal of snowboarding legend Shaun White, who criticized the safety standards of the Slopestyle Snowboarding venue at the Extreme Park.

"I can understand if it's your first time to the Olympics, you wouldn't understand a decision like the one I made. But you set your goals according to what's important to you. Halfpipe is important to me and I didn't want to jeopardize that," White spoke about his withdrawal from the Slopestyle event and his mission to defend his gold medal in men's half-pipe in an interview with the Associated Press on Saturday.

Girl Power on the Slopes

Once again, the United States is viewed as the super power in this inaugural event in the Winter Olympics. Jamie Anderson already punched her ticket to the final round after scoring 93.50 in Thursday's preliminary round. However, it was Austria's Anna Gasser who really stood out in the opening day of competition as her flawless run gave her the top score of 95.50.

Anderson and Gasser are the favorites to land the top two spots on the medal podium while six other competitors (Isabel Derungs of Switzerland, Torah Bright of Australia, Spencer O'Brien of Canada, Elena Koenz of Switzerland, Enni Rukajarvi of Finland and Karly Shorr of the United States) have already secured their places in the medal round.

The playing field will get bigger once the final round qualifiers from the semifinal round are determined early Saturday morning.
