The proposed showdown between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Amir Khan is now in jeopardy. Marcos Maidana is now being strongly considered for the undefeated boxing champion's next fight, reports on Thursday indicated.

Bad Left Hook reported that Maidana is winning in terms of popularity among fans as proven by the huge number of votes in favor of him since Mayweather asked his fans who his next opponent should be: Khan or Maidana.

Jeff Mayweather, the uncle of the Floyd Jr., also revealed that his nephew's camp is now leaning towards picking Maidana for the May 3 bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

According to Jeff Mayweather, the negative feedback from fans about the proposed Mayweather-Khan showdown might have swayed the reigning pound-for-pound king to turn down the planned bout against Khan and go up against Maidana instead.

"Originally, they were thinking Khan," Jeff Mayweather told MLive. "But with so much negative feedback, with the blogs and various things—it seemed like every time you saw Amir Khan's name attached to it, it said he had no chance."

Jeff Mayweather also added that he sees no reason why Khan is being considered to face his nephew, insisting that the Briton has not done anything to earn a shot at Floyd, who was recently named by the Boxing Writers Association of America as the 2013 Fighter of the Year.

On the contrary, Maidana's stock is at its peak after his impressive victory over Adrien Broner during their WBA welterweight title showdown in December.

Maidana was a heavy underdog, but he managed to pull off a convincing unanimous decision win over the then-undefeated Broner, sending shockwaves throughout the entire boxing world.

"Amir Khan doesn't have a title and he hasn't done anything to deserve a shot," Jeff Mayweather said. "People want to see Floyd against the guy who beat Adrien Broner. They want to compare the imitator against the genuine one. Realistically, that's what he [Broner] is, an imitator of the legitimate thing."

Upon learning that Mayweather is now strongly considering Maidana, Khan voiced his frustration through his Twitter account.

"Mayweather says he needs a easy fight and fans want to see a knock out so maybe that's the reason he doesn't want fight me and wants Maidana," Khan posted on his Twitter account.
