Floyd Mayweather Jr. has yet to pick his next opponent for his May 3 ring appearance at MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, Nev, but even before he picks his foe, Boxing 22 writer Nick Hagan believes the reigning pound-for-pound king is nothing but a cherry picker.
According to the veteran boxing pundit, Mayweather seems to be content in picking opponents who are way inferior or lacking the tools to pull off an upset against him. Hagan called this "cherry picking."
"There is absolutely no doubt, that Floyd Mayweather Jr. is a great boxer. However, many boxing fans, are becoming increasingly disappointed, because time and time again, they are just being short changed by Mayweather as an elite boxer," stated Hagan in his article.
Hagan pointed out that Mayweather's superb shoulder roll defense, reflexes and counter-punching ability are simply extraordinary. However, the boxing writer added that his fighting style only appears invincible every time he's fighting big, flat-footed opponents such Robert Guerrero, Miguel Cotto and Saul Canelo Alvarez.
"Mayweather's career success has been based around his ability to use the 'Philly Shell' roll defense, his reflexes and to counter-punch, arguably doing all three, better than anyone in the history of our sport."
"Just by listing Myweather's last six opponents, 'Alvarez, Guerrero, Cotto, Ortiz, Mosley and Marquez. All of these boxers (possibly with the exception of an Old Shane Mosley) were 'flat footed' and just not quick enough to consecutively land clean shots on Mayweather. I'm not saying they are not great boxers; it's just that Mayweather makes them look ordinary, because of their styles," Hagan said.
Marcos Maidana or Amir Khan
For the first time ever, Mayweather announced that his next opponent will be decided via fan voting on his website. Great Britain's top welterweight Amir Khan and Argentine slugger Marcos Maidana were named the top contenders for his Cinco de Mayo bout, leaving proverbial favorite and former pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao as the odd man out.
Still, Hagan believes that Khan will pose more danger to Mayweather than Maidana because of his hand speed and reflexes. While Maidana is a hard-hitter, Hagan thinks the Argentine is going to suffer the same beating other slow, flat-footed opponents have against a faster and more agile Mayweather.
"I'm of the belief that Khan presents more danger than Maidana. I respect and think Maidana is a great boxer, but he is flat footed and is no different to Mayweather's previous six opponents," added Hagan, who believes the fan voting was intentionally made to get him out of the Khan fight.
