Rafael Nadal's Australian Open final loss to Stanislas Wawrinka was the lowest point of his career, describing it as "the worst hour and a half" he ever played on a tennis court, the world's No. 1 men's singles player said in an interview with the COPE radio network on Monday.
Nadal, 27, voiced his frustration for the first time since suffering a 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 defeat at the hands of Wawrinka in their men's singles championship match at the Australian Open.
According to the 13-time Grand Slam champion, he was very aware that his back was against the wall heading into the finals match with Wawrinka, but he decided to continue playing despite being bothered with a back injury.
"I knew I had no chance of winning [the Australian Open final], but I had no intention of retiring. It was the worst hour and a half that I have spent on a tennis court," Nadal told the Spanish radio network.
Prolonged Misery
Nadal admitted that his loss at the Australian Open final has kept haunting him, which is a very much unusual for him.
"The soul is good. It wouldn't be right to say I was not well after all the things this life has given me. I am a person that takes losses very well, I always have been, and I really do not think about them anymore after a few hours. This time it's taking me a little more," Nadal said.
When asked about the status of his health, the Spaniard said he's on course to a steady recovery following another examination on Monday. Still, Nadal doesn't feel optimistic about his chance of playing in Buenos Aires as he has yet to hit a tennis ball since his last match in Australia.
"I am fine. I underwent another examination today [Monday] and I have continued the same treatment since I returned from Melbourne. I have not yet hit the court or done any exercise, I have been resting and have tried to do the right rehabilitation so I can get back on court as soon as possible, am my goal is to do it Thursday," Nadal added.
