The New York Knicks could eventually trade incoming free agent small forward Carmelo Anthony with roughly three weeks left before the end of the trading period, according to Bleacher Report writer Brian Mazique in his Thursday column.
Mazique indicated several players who could be traded at any point from now. One of them is Anthony, who is set to become an unrestricted free-agent at the end of the 2013-2014 season.
Although the possibility of Anthony staying put with the Knicks remains high, there's always a chance the All-Star forward could bolt out of the Big Apple and join another big market title-contender such the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, or the Chicago Bulls, a team many basketball followers picked as the perfect spot for the star.
The 29-year old Anthony hinted in his latest interview that he's going to join a team that will give him the best shot at winning a championship.
"Championship is the only thing that's on my mind, is the only thing I want to accomplish, I want to achieve, and I'm going to do what I got to do to get that. That's my motivating factor. Nothing else even motivates me anymore, just that," Anthony told ESPN's Ian Begley.
Bullish Ambition
Many NBA insiders believe the Bulls will get Anthony this summer. With Luol Deng already traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers and Carlos Boozer expected to be amnestied at the end of the season, the Bulls will have the financial capacity to sign a max-player in the offseason.
Moreover, rumors about the Bulls trading Taj Gibson have also been circulating for quite some time. According to basketball pundits, dealing away Gibson for assets such as draft picks or expiring contracts can only mean the Bulls will indeed chase Anthony when he becomes an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
The Bulls are reportedly planning to sign a max player—likely Anthony—and bring in European hot shot Nikola Mirotic to form a formidable starting unit with All-Star center Joakim Noah, budding shooting guard Jimmy Butler and returning former MVP Derrick Rose.
However, the Knicks could not afford to let Anthony walk away without getting compensation. If the Knicks front office is bold enough, they could pull off a trade that would send Anthony to another ball club and get a combination of young players and draft picks in return.
