The Los Angeles Clippers are reportedly itching to trade small forward Jared Dudley before the Feb. 20 deadline, a source close to situation disclosed on Wednesday.
ESPN NBA insider Marc Stein broke the news about the Clippers' plan to unload a few players at the wing and get solid compensation in exchange for veteran small forward.
"Trade rumble: Clippers 'itchy' to make a deal and Jared Dudley, with PT harder to come by and logjam at wing spots, is unexpectedly in play," Stein posted on his Twitter account.
Dudley, who was involved in a three-team J.J. Reddick sign-and-trade deal last summer, is averaging 7.9 points and 2.1 rebounds per game this season. However, the arrival and surprising play of Hedo Turkoglu has made Dudley dispensable.
"Personal view is it's too soon for such changes but Doc Rivers clearly still in search of supporting cast he wants given Hedo/Sasha signings," added Stein, who has been one of the most reliable NBA insiders at ESPN.
The 28-year-old Dudley has been struggling with his shooting stroke this season, as he shot 45 percent from the field and 36 percent from the three-point line. Moreover, his inability to lock down his opponent at the wing made him a liability on the defensive end of the floor.
According to Matt Moore, the Clippers might have a hard time looking for a trade partner for Dudley, who is described as model role player on and off the floor. Still, there's no doubt that Dudley will likely be moved, if another team—likely a title contender—will provide a solid trade package for the swingman.
"The problem is that the Clippers are the kind of team in the market to buy a player like Dudley. He's a best fit on a contending team on the way up who needs a veteran option to improve their depth and shooting. The list of teams in that situaton are on short order, beyond maybe New York, and their trade options are limited," Moore stated.
"But Dudley's healthy, a great teammate, able to shoot and can contribute. It might take a bigger deal to find something, but definitely add Dudley to the list of guys who could be on the move at the deadline," the analyst added.
