Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey recently said that Omer Asik will likely stay put this season, but a recent report indicates the team is still planning to trade the disgruntled center.
Basketball Insiders reported that the Rockets are just playing the waiting game and will eventually become aggressive in looking for takers for Asik as the deadline nears.
Sources said that the trade value of Asik plummeted greatly since the failed attempt to trade him earlier in the season. But Morey looks determined to move the unhappy center for a lesser value compared to what they could have received had they traded Asik in December.
The Rockets almost pulled the trigger in December on a deal that would have sent Asik to the Boston Celtics for Brandon Bass and Courtney Lee. However, talks dissolved when the Rockets asked the Celtics to include a future first-round pick in the deal.
Recent reports indicated the Celtics and the Rockets could revisit their talks about a potential trade before the deadline. The Celtics are reportedly willing to offer Jeff Green in exchange for Asik, but future picks are expected to be mentioned in the talks as well.
Sources also added that the Rockets might try to package Asik and Jeremy Lin in a trade for Rajon Rondo, but the possibility of acquiring Rondo looks like a long shot since Boston have shown no indications that they are willing to trade the All-Star point guard.
Asik is expected to draw the interest of teams looking for frontcourt help, particularly teams who are looking to make a deep run in the playoffs this season.
However, most teams are reportedly shying away from acquiring Asik due to his "poison pill" contract, which pays him $15 million in the final year of his deal next season.
Aside from the non-cap-friendly back-loaded deal, teams also have no idea of the current health condition and shape of the 27-year-old center, who has not played since December.
The team said that Asik is dealing with a thigh injury, but it is widely believed that his absence is related to the trade he requested after the Rockets acquired superstar center Dwight Howard in the offseason.
