Bash faced a new set of trials as the King's regent on the latest episode of "Reign."
In "Sacrifice," Catherine (Megan Follows) is in her prison cell, but still gets the guards to do her dirty work. She unsuccessfully tries to poison Bash (Torrance Coombs) to regain her title in court, which would once again put Francis (Tony Regbo) next in line to be king.
Meanwhile, Francis is taking advantage of his freedom outside of the castle.
King Henry (Alan Van Sprang) is also away from court, and puts Bash in charge as acting regent. As regent, Bash is forced to listen to the problems of the villagers and decide how criminals are to be punished.
Two new characters are also introduced in the episode: Bash's new bodyguard, Alec (Daniel Fathers), and Isobel (Amy Forsyth), a pregnant thief. It's revealed that Isobel is also Bash's cousin, as well as the daughter of a traitor.
Isobel goes into labor at court, and Mary (Adelaide Kane) plans to help Isobel keep her baby by escaping the castle with Bash. Bash, Mary, Isobel and Alec have to go through the Blood Woods to avoid being killed by Catherine's men, who were sent after them after her plan to kill Bash failed.
The four set up a tent in which to deliver Isobel's baby, but they are ambushed by pagans at night. In order to save themselves. Bash, Isobel and Alec chant a heretic prayer, and Bash admits to Mary that his family are pagans.
Queen Mary then delivers the baby, which turns out to be a girl.
Unfortunately, the joy is short-lived, because Isobel bleeds out from the birth and passes away. Bash is then forced to return to court with her body and say that he killed her because she was a prisoner who tried to escape.
Bash considers his controversial past in the episode, and tells Mary that his duty is always to those he loves.
"I'm not Francis," Bash tells Mary. "My duty will never be to some country, some land, some throne. If I'm married to you, you'll be my family. I'll be in it for you, only you."
In the next episode, "Inquisition," "King Henry arrests his wife for treason and adultery. Catherine tries to expose Bash for the person he once was to save her own life, while Mary and Bash try to expose Catherine's own dark past."
Executive producer Laurie McCarthy told TVLine that the next couple of episodes will delve into Clarissa's backstory.
"We'll learn how it is that she's rooted to this castle, who it is that she's kind of related to, and we'll learn a back story that even she doesn't know - and that backstory will anger her," McCarthy said.
She also said that Clarissa's protection of Mary is "a little bit like having the Mafia as your best friend. Her moral compass is not quite set at the right angle and when she perceives a slight, she reacts pretty violently."
Additionally, she said Mary will never forget that she's queen when it comes to her romantic relationships, and hints that "things will come to a terrible head" for one of the show's couples later in the season.
Watch the promo for "Inquisition" below, which airs Thursday, Feb. 6 at 9 p.m. on The CW.
