Kevin Love is expected to become one of the hottest names mentioned in trade talks in the coming weeks, but reports on Monday indicated that the Minnesota Timberwolves will not consider trading the NBA All-Star forward.
HoopsRumors reported that Love could remain in Minnesota at least until before next season's trade deadline. Sources said that Timberwolves executives are expected to take advantage of the remaining time that they have to make moves that would convince the 25-year-old superstar to stay.
"I think Kevin Love will be one of the hottest names at next year's deadline, but a trade this year seems unlikely," HoopsRumors noted.
Sports Illustrated's FanSided added that the Timberwolves is in a very tough situation. Their executives, like most executives in the league, know that Love is leaning towards leaving Minnesota when he becomes a free agent in the summer of 2015.
The Timberwolves would likely try to get assets through a trade instead of losing Love for nothing via free agency. However, sources said that Minnesota might not get their desired assets since teams are also reluctant to make a trade for the sixth-year forward.
"The logic behind trading Love is simple: if he's going to walk next summer, why not give him what he wants right now and get something back for him rather than letting him walk for free. Teams know Love is going to walk though and he's not certain to sign a long-term deal once dealt, making him a poor trade chip," FanSided noted.
The best possible scenario for the Timberwolves is trading Love to the Los Angeles Lakers or the New York Knicks before the trade deadline next season.
Both teams are expected to make a run at Love when he hits free agency in 2015, but one of them might want to get an advantage and secure the services of the superstar forward before he becomes a free agent via trade before the deadline next season. At this point, NBA analysts are still convinced that Love wants to play in Los Angeles.
"The Lakers and Knicks appear to be the teams in the lead to acquire him either via trade or through free agency in the summer of 2015, with an edge going to the L.A., where Love played college ball," HoopsRumors noted.
