The latest installment of "Nashville" had Juliette speaking her mind and Tandy hiding from the Feds.
In "It's All Wrong, But It's Alright," Rayna (Connie Britton) brings Liam (Michiel Huisman) to work with Scarlett (Clare Bowen), but he does not like the image she's creating for her new song. He knows that she isn't the "whiskey-slammin', dirty dancin' kind of girl," as her song describes. When Scarlett won't open up to him, he steals her journal and reads it.
Liam gets some good backstory from the journal, including the fact that her mother has spent time in a psych ward. They decide to record a song about her mom, but Scarlett is so tired while recording that she takes a stimulant pill Liam offers her.
Meanwhile, Deacon's (Charles Esten) new label wants him to record songs with his famous friends. He asks Juliette (Hayden Panettiere), but she declines.
At the Grand Old Opry, Juliette ditches an apology that Jeff (Oliver Hudson) wants her to deliver to her fans, and instead speaks her mind. After her performance, Rayna tells her that it may not have been a smart move, but it was a brave one. Jeff drops Juliette from Edgehill, then she proceeds to make some pink macaroni and head over to Avery's (Jonathan Jackson). She says he's the only thing she has left, and they kiss before he takes her into the bedroom.
Luke (Will Chase) shows how much he cares for Rayna by putting her face on the hood of a NASCAR race car he co-owns.
At Will (Chris Carmack) and Gunnar's (Sam Palladio) place, Layla (Aubrey Peeples) shows up and asks Gunnar to write a song with her. But there's one major problem: she has no clue how to write a song. She storms out but later apologizes, saying she's only done what people ask her to do.
Meanwhile, Tandy ( Judith Hoag) is in a motel in Biloxi, hiding from the U.S. Attorney. The Feds eventually bust into the motel and arrest her for violating her plea deal. She is afraid that her father will target her if she testifies against him, so she and her lawyer find a loophole to make her evidence inadmissible, allowing her to walk.
On the next episode, "Too Far Gone," "A successful producer likes Juliette's new song and invites her to Los Angeles to record for him. Elsewhere, Rayna puts her emotions aside and adopts a take-charge attitude; and a lonely Scarlett opens up to Liam."
Also, executive Producer Dee Johnson told TVLine that Rayna and Juliette will be in a story arc together once again. Johnson said the singers have "a very strange relationship, because Juliette totally admires Rayna - though she would never say that to her face - and Rayna has been down the road that Juliette is on currently. So they will always be crossing paths."
Series creator Callie Khouri also hinted that the season two finale will be much more subtle than the first season's.
"I would imagine we would not go out with a car wreck or anything like that," she said. "We're not going to have an explosion. Nothing like that. Whatever fireworks we go out on this season will be all emotional."
Watch the promo below for "Too Far Gone," which airs Wednesday, Feb 5 at 10 p.m. on ABC.
