The Brooklyn Nets made a big splash in the offseason when they acquired veterans Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett via a blockbuster deal with the Boston Celtics, but that doesn't mean that they are not thinking about their future.
The New York Daily News reported that the Nets are planning to make a big free agency splash in the summer of 2016, and they are planning to pursue Oklahoma City Thunder superstar Kevin Durant.
"The impending Durant free agency bonanza should start picking up steam next season and will undoubtedly engulf the NBA in the summer of 2016. And make no mistake: the Nets are targeting Durant, the 25-year-old offensive juggernaut, even if it's too early to predict their odds," the Daily News reported.
According to the report, the Nets will have a lot of cap space in 2016, and Deron Williams could be the lone player on their books if the superstar point guard decides to pick up his team option for the 2016-17 NBA season.
Sources said that most NBA executives strongly believe that All-Star forward Durant will seriously consider leaving the Thunder in 2016 especially if the Thunder fail to win a title before Durant hits free agency.
Oklahoma City has one of the smallest markets in the league, and it could be one of deciding factors when Durant makes his decision along with the fact that the ownership group of the Thunder looks determined to avoid the luxury tax as proven by the James Harden-to-Houston Rockets deal.
Brooklyn, on the other hand, boasts a big market and their owner is always willing to go on a spending spree to improve their chances of winning an NBA title.
Talking about the possible signing of Durant, Nets All-Star point guard Williams insisted that playing in a big market like Brooklyn will make a huge difference for a superstar of Durant's caliber, but added that the 25-year-old can still earn big money should he decide to stay in Oklahoma City.
"For someone like [Durant], I think it makes a bigger difference because of the endorsements he'd command in a market like this. I mean, look at what he's already doing in Oklahoma City. But at the same time, maybe he's such a big name that it doesn't matter where he's at," Williams stressed.
