The Mikey Garcia-Yuriorkis Gamboa showdown could happen very soon as Top-Rank Promotions honcho Bob Arum confirmed the negotiation has already started for the possible slugfest between the two top super featherweights in the world.

In an interview with Steve Kim of Steve Max Boxing, Arum said negotiations are going on now between Garcia and Gamboa's camp and the fight could happen on May 17 at the Forum.

"Bob Arum says they are working on Mikey Garcia-Yuriorkis Gamboa, could be May 17th at.... the Forum!!!" Max posted on his Twitter account.

Heated Showdown

American rapper 50 Cent, the promoter of Gamboa, has called out Garcia several times and even mocked the reining WBO super featherweight champion by describing him as a beautiful woman.

"They may not be sure if they want him back on the [HBO] network because he just put us to sleep in here...don't forget that," 50 Cent via Sports World News "Mikey is a beautiful woman. She wore the blue trunks for us with the wings."

Garcia quickly replied to 50 Cent's accusations, announcing he's ready to take on Gamboa in the135-pound division.

"I'm willing to go up and meet him at 135 if he doesn't want to come down. I think it would be a great fight. People would want to see it. Why not? Let's do it. I think anybody they put in front of me, I'm ready to fight," Garcia said via Sports World.

Litmus Test For Garcia

Many boxing pundits consider Garcia as one of boxing's rising stars with the potential to become a multi-division world champion. But Boxing News reporter Chris Williams believes the Gamboa fight will be the toughest test for the 26-year old Garcia.

His victory over Orlando Salido, Juan Manuel Lopez, Rocky Martinez and recently with Juan Carlos Burgos made him the hottest young star in Top-Rank's stable. However, a win over Gamboa will make the boxing aficionados convinced he's ready to take the elites in the sport, and there is no bigger name in Arum's promotions than Manny Pacquiao.

On the other hand, a loss to Gamboa (23-0-0) will shatter not only Garcia's immaculate professional boxing record (34-0 with 28 KOs) but as well his dream of getting big paycheck with Pacquiao later this year.

"Gamboa has a chance to destroy Mikey's dreams of getting the Pacquiao fight, while at the same time ruining Arum's dreams of having Mikey as his next star," Williams stated.

"If Gamboa beats Mikey, there's no way that Arum can sell a Pacquiao-Mikey fight to the boxing public. That doesn't mean that Arum won't go ahead and peddle a fight between Mikey and Pacquiao anyway as a PPV on HBO," the analyst added.
