Within a week after Justin Bieber was arrested on DUI charges in Miami Beach, a White House petition demanding that the Canadian singer be deported has collected over 100,000 signatures. As a result, the White House will be required to issue an official response, reports Time.
Along with DUI, the19-year-old pop star was charged with resisting arrest and driving with an expired driver's license after cops pulled him over for drag racing around 4:13 a.m. last Thursday, reports CNN. The teen heartthrob spent some hours in jail before he was released on a $2500 bond.
However, now Americans are calling for the government to revoke his O-1 visa which is issued to immigrants with "extraordinary ability or achievement" in their field or profession. He could lose his work visa and be tossed out of the country on any conviction for an aggravated offense.
"We the people of the United States feel that we are being wrongly represented in the world of pop culture," reads the online petition. "We would like to see the dangerous, reckless, destructive, and drug abusing Justin Bieber deported and his green card revoked. He is not only threatening the safety of our people but he is also a terrible influence on our nation's youth. We the people would like to remove Justin Bieber from our society."
However, Ira Kurzban, an immigration attorney, told the Hollywood Reporter that Bieber is "not subject to deportation because of a DUI offense, nor is driving with an expired license a deportable offense."
Plus, his minor offenses wouldn't keep him from being readmitted into the U.S.
