The Elder Scrolls Online will require users to pay a monthly subscription fee, but the PlayStation 4 version of the game won't require users to have a subscription to PlayStation Plus to play the game online.
In a PlayStation Blog post, Matt Firor, a game director for ZeniMax Online Studios (parent company of The Elder Scrolls Online developer Bethesda), announced that the PlayStation 4 version of the game has the same online requirements as the PC or Mac version of the game.
"A PlayStation Plus membership is not required to play The Elder Scrolls Online. PS4 players will only be required to pay the same monthly subscription associated with The Elder Scrolls Online that PC and Mac users will pay - nothing more," wrote Firor.
While this certainly will be welcome news for fans of the series who have yet to purchase PlayStation Plus for the PlayStation 4, which is required for PlayStation 4 users to play most games online, there is no word if the Xbox One version of the game will allow users to play the game online without a Xbox Live subscription.
The game director also revealed that PC and Mac users will play on a different server than PlayStation 4 users, meaning that it looks like there will be no cross platform play for The Elder Scrolls Online.
"PS4 users will have their own dedicated ESO megaservers (European and North American). PC and Mac users will not be on the PS4 megaservers. This is good news for PS4 players as they won't have to worry about contending with higher-level PC players when ESO launches on the PlayStation 4," wrote Firor.
In addition to questions about the online properties of the game, Firor also revealed some gameplay facts for The Elder Scrolls Online, and that the game will play somewhat like The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, but with some key differences to the control scheme.
"Throughout ESO's development, our goal has been to create an MMO that is fun to play and is familiar to Skyrim fans. Gameplay in ESO isn't identical to Skyrim, so naturally we've made some button configuration changes to reflect the differences, such as the use of abilities. At the same time, there are a lot of controller configuration similarities between Skyrim and ESO," he added.
