It's official: Jonathan Banks will join Bob Odenkirk in the new "Breaking Bad" spin-off series "Better Call Saul" later on this year.
The upcoming prequel to the Emmy-winning series will focus on Odenkirk, a criminal lawyer with a shady reputation, played by actor Saul Goodman. Banks, who played the lethal, world-weary fixer Mike Ehrmantraut on the highly acclaimed drug drama, will also be a series regular on the show conceived by "Breaking Bad" creator Vince Gilligan and writer/producer Peter Gould, reports Deadline. Banks was a regular on "Breaking Bad" and played Ehmantraut for two and a half seasons until Mike was murdered.
The AMC prequel will chronicle the evolution of Saul before he ever became Walter White's lawyer. Plus, Saul will have his Ehrmantraut, his trusted private investigator, by his side.
In addition to serving as the head of security for drug and chicken lord Gustavo Fring, before later teaming up with Walter and Jesse, Ehrmatraut worked as a PI/cleaner in association with Saul.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gilligan admitted that Ehrmatraut was the most logical character to wind up on "Saul," however, he signal that there might be more.
"I would say the sky's the limit, at least theoretically speaking," he said.
"Realistically speaking, we've got a whole lot of actors, and the world is now well-aware of their wonderful talents and abilities, and therefore 'Breaking Bad' has probably made it tougher for Peter and I to get some of these folks pinned down for another TV show," he added.
He also joked that, "'Better Call Saul' could be 'The Love Boat' of its generation, where instead of Milton Berle showing up in a sailor's cap, hopefully it could be Aaron Paul, also in a sailor's cap."
"Better Call Saul" will debut on AMC in November.
