Adrien Broner took a humiliating defeat in his previous fight, but the former champion is confident he is still the closest thing to Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Broner, who absorbed his first defeat during his WBA welterweight title showdown with Marcos Maidana last month, said that when he lost to the Argentine fighter, boxing fans felt like Mayweather also suffered a defeat.
"I'm the closest thing to Floyd Mayweather, so since I took my loss, everybody feel like Floyd Mayweather took a loss," Broner said in a ShowTime interview. "Because I'm the closest thing to him. And still to this day I'm the closest thing to him."
Before losing to Maidana, the 24-year-old American proclaimed himself as the heir apparent to the reigning pound-for-pound king, and ShowTime was also treating him as their next big star. However, all of the comparisons were thrown out of the window after "The Problem" was dominated by Maidana.
Broner, who was 27-0 with 22 KOs before the Maidana bout, recently admitted that he was clearly out-hustled by the 30-year-old Argentine, but he vowed not to commit the same mistakes that he made last month when they square off again in a rematch.
"What I need to tell everybody that isn't inside that squared circle, sometimes when you get hit with good shots, it's some shots you just don't see. You're gonna get hit with big shots. But at the end of the day, man, you know, we're ready to go back to camp. We're ready for the rematch," Broner said.
The Ohio native will eventually get a chance to redeem himself against Maidana, but Broner may have to wait as the reigning champion's camp already confirmed that they will not agree to a rematch in April.
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer previously announced that the Maidana-Broner rematch will take place on April 19 or 26 either in San Antonio, Texas or in California.
However, the rematch will now be pushed back after Maidana told GBP that he will not have enough time to prepare if the fight will be scheduled in April, while also adding that his girlfriend is expected to give birth in March.
