On the latest installment of "Downton Abbey," Anna's horrible secret was finally disclosed and Mary reunited with an former suitor.

In the episode, Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) finds out that Lord Gillingham (Tom Cullen) is marrying Ms. Mabel Lane Fox after Mary turned down his earnest marriage proposal. She feigns happiness, and a tear or two come to her eyes as she writes him a letter of congratulations.

Bates (Brendan Coyle) becomes increasingly perplexed and upset as to why Anna (Joanne Froggatt) continues to avoid him, leading him to believe that she doesn't love him anymore.

Meanwhile, new lady's maid Baxter (Raquel Cassidy) seems to be getting along swimmingly with Cora (Elizabeth McGovern), as well as everyone else downstairs. But, it's clear she's beginning a dubious relationship with the scheming Thomas (Rob James-Collier). Thomas coaches her on gaining everyone's trust in order to gain inside information on the latest gossip, particularly the goings-ons of the Crawley family.

Mary and Tom Branson (Allen Leech) continue in their quest to modernize Downton, and want to acquire the land from a tenant farmer who recently passed in order to farm the land. However, the tenant's son wants to keep the land, but the rent is in arrears. Although Mary is against it at first, Lord Crawley (Hugh Bonneville) decides to offer him a loan in order to keep the farm.

Tom also says he wants to go to America to raise little Sybil, to Robert's chagrin.

Footman Alfred (Matt Milne) goes to the Ritz in London to take a cooking test in the hopes of becoming a cook at the posh hotel.

Back at Downton, Bates can no longer take Anna's unyielding silence. He pressures Mrs. Hughes (Phyllis Logan) into telling him what is ailing Anna by threatening his departure if he is not told the truth. Mrs. Hughes finally breaks, and tells him everything--except who committed the heinous crime.

Bates tells Anna that he knows, and Anna sobs, saying she is spoiled for him. In an utterly heart-wrenching scene, Bates assures Anna of his undying love for her, and that she is even more noble in his eyes for carrying on despite her suffering.

Later, Bates tells Mrs. Hughes that he is determined to find the man who harmed his wife.

Lady Isobel Crawley (Penelope Wilton) convinces the Dowager Countess (Dame Maggie Smith) to take on a new gardner in need of a job, but Violet fears that he stole her valuable paper knife.

Alfred then finds out that he did not get the job and will not be leaving Downton after all, which cheers Daisy (Sophie McShera) up, as she would have been upset to see him go.

Lady Mary also gets a visit from former suitor Lord Napier (Brendan Patricks), who is researching the affects of the war on old estates. He and his superior, Mr. Charles Blake (Julian Ovenden), will be staying at Downton, as per Mary's request, to inspect the estate's economic infrastructure.

On the next episode, Charles Blake will come to Downton, and Isobel and Violet will be at odds about the new young gardner.

The upcoming episode's synopsis reads: "Pride and prejudice mark Robert's surprise birthday party when Rose's potentially scandalous recruit raises eyebrows and Mary clashes with an instantly antagonistic man of the people. Bates and Anna step out, and Edith gets troubling news."

Watch the promo for the next episode below, which airs Sunday, Feb. 2 at 9 p.m. EST on PBS.
