Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will add another chapter to their storied rivalry when the two tennis superstars clash in the Australian Open 2014 semifinals at 3:30 a.m. EST Friday at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne.
Nadal, who is looking to grab his second Australian Open title, is coming off a hard-earned 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 victory over 22nd seed Grigor Dimitrov in the quarterfinals.
The 27-year-old Spanish tennis ace has been solid all-tournament long despite being bothered by a blood blister on his left hand.
But while he managed to dispatch Dimitrov in their quarterfinals showdown, Nadal fears that his taped sore left hand could slow him down in his highly-anticipated showdown with Federer.
"I feel that with the tape, I can lose the racquet when I'm serving," Nadal told reporters via Herald Sun. "That's my feeling. The racquet can go. That's a terrible feeling for a serve, because then when you have this feeling, you are not able to accelerate at the right moment. You lose a little bit the coordination. That's a big deal."
Federer, who is aiming to end his longstanding major title drought, is expected to take advantage of the blister factor in their semis duel, which bodes well for him considering how well he is playing in the tournament.
The 32-year-old Swiss tennis ace has only dropped one set all-tournament long, which came during his quarterfinals victory over fourth seed Andy Murray, 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3.
Experts said that Federer is looking like the Federer of old who won 17 grand slam titles. However, the odds are still stacked against him heading into Friday's showdown due to his well-documented struggles against his Spanish counterpart.
Nadal holds a 22-10 head-to-head record advantage over Federer, including an 8-2 lead in all grand slam meetings. Federer also lost to Nadal in their first two Australian Open showdowns.
The winner of the 33rd meeting between Federer and Nadal will face Stanislas Wawrinka in the Australian Open 2014 finals.
Wawrinka, who scored a monumental upset win over three-time defending champion Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals, booked the first ticket to this year's Aussie Open finals with a 6-3, 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-4) win over seventh seed Tomas Berdych on Thursday.
