The PlayStation 4 continues to be a hot commodity even after the holiday shopping season, as retailer Gamestop recently received a shipment of the consoles from Sony, according to Gamespot, but have already sold out of the console online.

Sony had warned fans that the console would be "supply challenged" in the early part of 2014, but the company would be releasing shipments of the console to try and service the demand for the console. GameStop received one of these shipments on Jan. 22, and the company's online store is out of stock of the basic PlayStation 4 bundle. However, copies of the machine may still be available at Gamestop locations around the country, so those looking to buy the console still have a chance to snag the $399 system. Those looking for a PlayStation 4 are encouraged to call their local company branch to see if they still have the machines available.

In addition, GameStop's online store still has PlayStation 4 bundles available; however, they are more expensive than the usual package for the Sony platform. Both the Killzone and Call of Duty features the game console, the game featured in the titled bundle, NBA 2K14, two Dualshock 4 controllers, and a one-year subscription for PlayStation Plus. These online-only bundles will cost gamers $629.95, so unless gamers were intent on buying these items anyway, they may want to wait until more PlayStation 4 consoles are available.

Despite the general lack of PlayStation 4 consoles available worldwide, Sony has managed to set a record pace for sales. In 2013 alone, the console sold 4.2 million units, more than the 3 million units the Xbox One sold at the end of 2013. Considering that both consoles were launched in November of that year, it is amazing that the machines were able to hit these marks and outpace previous sales records.

The PlayStation 4 may be in short supply for now, but Sony is working hard to make sure that the console will be more widely available in 2014. The video game system is available in many different countries, but not in Japan, which may be a factor in why Sony is unable to release many units to retailers. After all, Japan is one of the biggest video game markets in the world, and Sony is most likely stockpiling supply for the launch of the PlayStation 4 in that country.
