Despite calls for a reprieve from Mexico as well as several human rights organizations, the State of Texas executed Edgar Arias Tamayo, a Mexican national who had been convicted of murdering a Houston police officer.
The case was part of a UN International Court of Justice case that included 51 Mexican citizens in death row in U.S. prisons who, according to the findings of the court, had not been given their rights to consulate services in a timely manner.
"If he had had the assistance of the Mexican Consulate at the time of trial, Mr. Tamayo would never have been sentenced to death," his attorneys, Sandra Babcock and Maurie Levin, said in a statement. "This case was not just about one Mexican national on death row in Texas. The execution of Mr. Tamayo violates the United States' treaty commitments, threatens the nation's foreign policy interests, and undermines the safety of all Americans abroad."
But friends and family of the Houston police officer say that justice was served. Witnessing the execution, some police officers were satisfied with the outcome.
"We believe that Mr. Tamayo got every right guaranteed to him as any person who was here legally," Houston Police Officer Ray Hunt, president of the Houston Police Officers' Union said to reporters. He said the execution was "as much justice as the family can get."
"A little bit of my shredded heart is feeling better," the murdered officer's mother, Gayle, said to the AP.
The state government in Texas declined a last minute request for clemency as late as Tuesday.
"It doesn't matter where you're from," said Lucy Nashed to the AP, spokeswoman for Gov. Rick Perry. "If you commit a despicable crime like this in Texas, you are subject to our state laws, including a fair trial by jury and the ultimate penalty."
Tamayo had no final statement to make before the execution was carried out.
