A new screenshot of Super Smash Bros. 4 released by Nintendo may have revealed the game's single-player mode, though what exactly this mode may be like remains a mystery.
Released on the game's official webpage as well as on the Miiverse page for game director Masahiro Sakurai, the screenshot is from the 3DS version of the game. The screenshot shows what appears to be some sort of adventure mode, with Mario standing around in an unknown area with several platforms and no other characters on screen. Sakurai offered little explanation for the screenshot, instead teasing what the mode could be on his Miiverse page, and reminding fans that the previous single-player mode, The Subspace Emissary, won't be returning for the new game.
"Pic of the day. Where am I......?? To be clear, the new Super Smash Bros. games does not feature a story mode like The Subspace Emissary," wrote Sakurai.
If the game isn't going to feature a story mod, then what sort of single player experience can fans hope for? Perhaps a simpler adventure mode will be available similar to older entries in the series where players must take on specific challenges ranging from fights with A.I. opponents to beating special stages with their own unique qualities. Hopefully Nintendo is able to craft a more popular single player experience than The Subspace Emissary, which many considered subpar when it was a part of Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Super Smash Bros. 4 is one of the most universally appealing games coming out in 2014, which is amazing considering the game is coming to the Wii U, a system that has failed to sell despite being the first of the latest round of next-gen consoles. However, the game is also coming to the 3DS and is the first entry into the series to come to a handheld system. Even though Nintendo is struggling, Super Smash Bros. 4 could be the spark the company needs. The game has a huge following that could boost the company's profits, especially if Nintendo bundles the game with the Wii U or 3DS.
Nintendo has yet to reveal when Super Smash Bros. 4 will be released, but the company promised that both versions of the game will be released in 2014. So far 21 characters have been confirmed for the game, including the newest confirmed character, King Dedede from the Kirby franchise.
