Adrien "The Problem" Broner wants to get back at Marcos "Chino" Maidana, but the previously unbeaten Broner will have to wait a little longer.
Broner, who absorbed the first defeat of his boxing career last month, exercised his rematch option last week as announced by Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer.
Schaefer said that Golden Boy Promotions is planning to stage the Broner-Maidana rematch on April 19 or 26 either in San Antonio, Texas or California, but Maidana and his camp turned down the proposed fight date.
"We just had an approaching telephone conversation with Al Haymon and I've let him know that April is too early," said Maidana's manager Sebastian Cortusi in a BoxingScene interview.
Cortusi pointed out that Maidana, the reigning World Boxing Association welterweight champion, needs more time to prepare for his first title defense. He added that Maidana needs six to ten weeks of rest before fighting again, and fighting in April will not give the Argentine-born champion enough time to rest and train for his next fight.
"We don't know about Broner, but Maidana usually needs six weeks to rest and ten weeks for training camp, so there is not enough time to rest and train properly for a major fight in April," Cortusi said.
Aside from the lack of time to get ready for his next fight, Cortusi revealed that Maidana will have no time to engage in boxing activities because the 30-year-old champion wants to stay with his girlfriend, who is scheduled to give birth to their daughter in mid-March.
"Maidana spent half of last year away from home training and his girlfriend is pregnant and expects for mid-March, so he wants to be present for his baby girl's birth. Those are the reasons," Cortusi said.
Maidana stunned the boxing world when he scored a dominating win over the then-unbeaten Broner, who was being groomed as a potential heir apparent to Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Broner came into the match as a heavy favorite, but he struggled to deal with the hard-hitting Maidana, who scored knockdowns in the second and eighth round of their showdown en route to a 117-109, 115-109, and 115-110 unanimous decision victory.
Broner recently admitted that he was outplayed and outhustled by Maidana, but he vowed not to make the same mistakes that he made during the first fight when the two of them square off again.
