Microsoft has quietly released an update for Surface Pro 2 but not all tablet owners have received the update yet.

The software update is said to be a re-release of the December update for the Surface Pro 2. The update initially made its debut on Dec. 10, however, Surface owners encountered error codes when trying to install the update as well as battery drainage issues. Microsoft decided to pull the Dec. 10 update and promised a fix after the December holiday season.

The Dec. 10 firmware update for the Surface Pro 2 included an improvement on system stability, an updated Wi-Fi driver for wireless display, connectivity with wireless access points, and improvements to the color fidelity. The tablet's update also had an optimized two-finger trackpad use, enhanced audio experience when connected to the Display Port 1.2 device, and better Surface Cover interaction including power-saving functionality.

Although the latest software update was not posted on the "Surface Pro 2 update history" webpage as of Jan. 19, Microsoft confirmed an initial rollout has started.

"This weekend we released an update that addresses the unexpected wake and battery drain behavior experienced by a small number of Surface Pro 2 customers who installed the December Windows Update," stated Microsoft, via The Verge. "This should have no impact on customers who had not received the December update. We are working hard to deliver the rest of the December update to those customers who had not received it prior to it being removed from distribution."

The Surface Pro 2 update comes days after Microsoft rolled out updates for the Surface 2 and original Surface Pro tablets.

To manually install the updates, the Surface tablet owner can swipe the screen from the right edge of the display and select "Settings." Next, click "Change PC Settings" followed by "Update and recovery." The user should then select "Check now." If an update is available, select "View details" and click "Install" for the final step. The software update may require the tablet to restart.
