Apple is allegedly planning to debut a much improved iPhone 5S soon. Instead of the Apple 5SE as initially speculated, the said model will be called the iPhone SE instead.

Apple's new 4-inch phone is dropping the "5" from its name because the company is worried about the customers getting confused. The original name was speculated to be the 5SE to mean the "special edition" of 5S, but Apple allegedly decided that it was too long. Apple might also be worried that the 5SE will not sell since users are less likely to buy a "5" model when there are already "6" models, from the iPhone 6, 6 Plus to 6s and 6S plus.

Despite the name change, the model is still going to be a revamped 5S model. Rumors have it that it will come with improved specs such as an A9 processor, 8MP camera, as well as a fingerprint scanner, and NFC. All of these features can be found in the current Apple flagship phones but are lacking in the iPhone 5S. Live Photos might be made available too.

With regard its appearance, however, fans will be disappointed to know that there will be minor changes to the original look. Recent leaks of the iPhone SE showed slightly curved edges along the phone's glass and a power button to the right, instead of on the top like the 5s.

The leaks came from a case maker, which can be considered credible. Before the recent leaks, however, many speculated that the new phone will look nothing like the 5S but everything like the iPhone 6s, only smaller. But it seems that Apple is not going to give up the form factor of the 5S yet. The name is already such a dead giveaway after all.

This all remains speculation until the phone is officially announced by Apple. It is expected that the company will be announcing this model at an event on March 15th, alongside new product offerings such as the new Apple Watch bands and the smaller iPad Pro.

Here is a video of what is currently known of the SE:
